Emma Campbell
3 – 24 October
Opening 6-9pm, Thursday 2nd October
Impossible cultural ideals of acceptable female behaviour are threaded through anti-abortion sentiment. Attempting to represent this experience for women in Ireland, becomes the “fulcrum of a much broader ideological struggle in which the very meanings of family, the state, motherhood, and… women’s sexuality are contested” (Rosalind Petchesky, 1986). The stigmatised abortion experience in the whole of Ireland is addressed through photography, film and collage. As part of her PhD research the artist will attempt to use the art and the gallery space for abortion rights activism.
